Primary Tuition: How we Plan a Lesson
Written by Rhiannon Wallace
Primary Specialist at Modelex, Monaco

Modelex, Monaco provides bespoke after school lessons for children aged 5 plus with a focus on mathematics and English. A student’s first visit to the centre will involve participation in personalised assessment activities, which may include oral and written tasks and will form the basis of the tailored education experience offered to your child.
You will be provided with an assessment analysis, outlining your child’s strengths and areas for development, and will have the opportunity to discuss the results in-person with a member of our specialist team.

Your child will be assigned a fully qualified and experienced primary specialist teacher, who will plan engaging and relevant lessons based on your child’s specific learning requirements analysed from our assessment.

The planning process for each lesson considers individual learning styles and learning objectives. Each lesson will contain a mix of appropriate problem solving, hands-on and written activities, designed to engage and enthuse your child. A key component of Modelex lessons is that your child will experience success within the learning session which will, in turn, build self-esteem and confidence in the subject.

The planning of a typical primary maths lesson

My planning process begins by considering the identified learning needs of the child based on assessment information and my evaluations of previous sessions. These allow me to decide on a suitable learning objective for each lesson.

Taking into account each child’s personality, interests and needs, I then plan and resource a range of activities, from a wide variety of respected educational sources, designed to achieve the stated learning objective in an engaging way.

After a brief welcome conversation to check-in on the child’s well-being and day at school, the lesson starts with a fun, introductory mental maths game to help develop recall of number facts followed by a short recap activity to check retention of learning from previous lessons.

New learning in the main part of the lesson, linked to the stated objective, is then introduced and follow-up activities completed to embed the learning. Through the variety of learning tasks, a range of mathematical skills are developed, for example problem solving, logical thinking and reasoning.

One particular advantage of the personalised 1:1 lesson, is that throughout the entire lesson, there is time for discussion and the child’s individual questions and misconceptions can be immediately identified and addressed. A key part of my planning is to identify the key questions for each stage of the lesson, which allows me to constantly assess learning and understanding. This means that I can modify the pace and content of the lesson to suit how well the child is grasping the concept.

At the end of the lesson, I will do a short reflection with the child about the lesson, including their favourite part, any struggles they had and what we will look at in the next lesson.
