The ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam)
is one of two major admissions test for US middle schools and high schools, and it is vital to achieve a high score to secure a place at the top private schools. The SSAT
is the other, and most schools will accept either one. The ISEE can be taken at Lower (students in 5th or 6th grade)
, Middle (7th and 8th grade)
, or Upper Level (9th grade and above)
.The ISEE is made up of four sections:
- Verbal Reasoning – this focuses on assessing a student's vocabulary and sentence completion
- Quantitative Reasoning – this tests maths skills including algebra, data analysis, probability, and problem solving
- Reading Comprehension – this assesses a student's ability to understand and answer questions on challenging passages of text from a variety of sources
- Mathematics Achievement – this second maths section has questions that require additional knowledge of mathematical terms and concepts, and which involve more complex calculations.
There is also an unscored Essay section, a copy of which is sent to the school the student is applying to and which provides additional context to the application.
Our focus in preparing students for the ISEE is on closing any gaps in a student's understanding or knowledge for the maths sections, and intensive practice and feedback to develop the ability to tackle each section under exam conditions. Our tutors are experienced in teaching students who do not have English as a first language, and can also advise parents about whether the ISEE or the SSAT is better suited for their child.
