Mock Exam Masterclasses – Easter Holidays
IGCSE
Monday 29th April – Friday 3rd May
The Easter holiday ends less than two weeks before the 2024 IGCSE exam diet begins.
It is absolutely essential that students revise and develop their exam skills during this period. For this reason, we have decided to offer a short, intensive course in IGCSE revision at the Modelex Education Centre in Fontvieille.
These courses will be led by experienced subject specialists with an outstanding track-record in the classroom. The lessons will be laser-focused on securing the knowledge and sharpening the skills that we know make the difference between an average performance (C/B) and an excellent performance (A/A*). Though we can offer classes in other subjects upon request, we will be focusing on the academic core – English, Mathematics and the Sciences. At the British School of Monaco Individual Programme, our students consistently achieve excellent grades. We are experts in giving students that extra 10 – 15% which can make all the difference.
We also invite students to do their own individual revision in our study space, through our ‘Study Hall’ offering. They will benefit from a focused working environment, good internet, a bank of up-to-date resources and the 1-1 support of our teaching team who will be available to answer questions and give pointers. It also creates a helpful distinction between a home and work environment that is useful for students.
While these Master Classes are aimed primarily at Y11 students with imminent exams, they will also be useful for Y10 students who want to get ahead.

The English Language and English Literature Master classes will be run by Mairin Kane, Roddy Dunlop and Robert Phelps. The English Language classes will use the most up-to-date past papers and mark schemes – only available to CIE schools – to prepare students for what they are likely to encounter in the real exams in May/June. There will be a focus both on achieving a maximum score in the shorted ‘closed’ questions, and on strategies for improving longer, written responses in both papers.
The Literature classes aim to broaden the students’ knowledge of technical vocabulary in analysis; and to develop their skills as literary analysts. It will then teach strategies to improve planning, structure and time management in the essay responses.

The International Mathematics and Mathematics Master classes will be run by Alp Aslan and Raymond Lim. The classes will use the most up-to-date past papers and mark schemes – only available to CIE schools – to prepare students for what they are likely to encounter in their mocks and the real exams in May/June.
Due to the slightly different format of examination in the two courses, there will be a focus on the longer-structure questions that appear on Paper 4 on both specifications as these papers are worth a respective 60% (0607) and 65% (0580) of the final grade. Achieving a high grade on these respective papers will be the main contributing factor to their final grade. There will also be an opportunity to look at and discuss in-depth questions that are usually used to differentiate candidates scoring in the highest assessment-objective brackets.

The Co-ordinated Sciences Master classes will be run by Joshua Johnson-Mottais and Raymond Lim. The Science classes will use the most up-to-date past papers and mark schemes – only available to CIE schools – to prepare students for what they are likely to encounter the real exams in May/June.
The masterclasses will cover the nuances explored in all of the exam papers in the Coordinated Sciences course. Students will learn which topics are regularly examined and what material should be memorised, as well as how to apply the material that they have memorised in longer-response questions. Students will be guided on how to phrase answers dependent on the type of instruction given, i.e. describe/explain/state. Students will also be taught where marks are awarded, as well as the keywords that are essential in gaining these marks.

HL Essay, Q and A |
The English Language and Literature Master classes will be run by Mairin Kane, Roddy Dunlop and Robert Phelps. At HL, these two exams are worth 60% of the final grade; at SL it is 70%, so there is everything to play for. It is also a course that depends far more on developing skills than knowledge, so smart and efficient teaching really is the key to exam success.
Paper 1 is an analysis of an unseen text – often with a stong visual component. It demands good analytical skills, good planning and good writing, and this will be the focus of our Master Class. In Paper 2, students respond to an unseen question using the literary texts they have studied in class. Knowing what and how to revise is of utmost importance; how to construct a good thesis under time pressure, and how to compare and evaluate texts.
